Study Finds That Homophobic People Are Actually More Likely To Be Gay

A study has found that people who display homophobic tendencies are more likely to be gay.

Teams at the University of Rochester in New York, the University of California and the University of Essex found that individuals who identify as straight, often showed a strong attraction to the same sex in psychological tests.

Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex and the study's lead author, said that these individuals "may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves".

The study analysed four separate experiments conduced in the US and Germany, which provided evidence that homophobia is in fact 'external manifestation of repressed sexual desires'.

Richard Ryan, a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester in New York, said that: "People who have homophobic attitudes, who are more prejudice or discriminatory against gay people, are themselves more likely to have a discrepancy between their unconscious attractions to same-sex partners than what they are aware of.

"Those people who have such discrepancies, who have really a split between their unconscious attraction and what they consciously say about themselves, are more likely to come from authoritarian homes."

"If you are a parent who really believes your child should be straight, and when you use whatever means you can to convince them them that they're only good and worthy if they are, that would be very controlling and it creates a lot of conflict in the child."

Professor Ryan concludes that the way that children process and resolve this information is to act out in a discriminatory or hateful way towards gay and lesbian people.

It's hoped that the findings might help to explain the dynamics behind bullying and hate crimes.

The 10 items parents cherish from their child's school days

As you head out on the annual back to school shopping trip, it can be alarming to think about the vast amount of stuff your children accumulate over their school years.

From carefully crafted cards to prized artworks, drawers quickly fill with mementoes of your child's achievements. But how much of this is just clutter? And which items will you cherish forever?

There are 10 items that mums treasure from their children's school years, according to research commissioned by Clarks to celebrate the Back to School Season.

The survey involved 2,000 mums - but we're sure many of these will also hold a special place in dads' hearts too!

When asked to reflect on their children's time at school, mums were most likely to recall their happiness when receiving their child's first school report, followed by the excitement of the preparation of getting them ready, and buying school shoes (happy!!?).

Not all the memories were quite so joyful, as many mums said the seemingly endless piles of washing formed one of their strongest memories of their child's school days - which is hardly surprising as the survey also revealed that on average a mum will have washed more than 1,400 loads of school uniform (and cleaned school shoes 125 times) during her child's time at school.

She will have also helped with 1,236 hours of homework, made 37 costumes, mended 49 holes in school uniform and nursed 67 grazed knees.

We're exhausted just thinking about it!

Back to school checklist

It's that time of year again, when you need to start thinking about shopping for school supplies.

Shopping for school uniform during the summer holidays may be viewed by children as a form of cruel and unusual punishment.

Shop online for as much as you can to make the process as painless as possible, and if you have to go to prescribed uniform shops aim for first thing in the morning and before the last week of the holidays to beat the crowds.

We've put together this checklist of everything your child will need for the school year ahead.

Uniform

If you haven't been sent a uniform list by your child's school, you can usually find it on the school's website - but these rarely include quantities. (The first figure is based on twice weekly washing, the second is for those hoping to do just one wash a week, or for those whose child is prone to losing things!)

3 - 5 sweaters/cardigans/sweatshirts

3 - 5 polo shirts/shirts

3-4 trousers/shorts and/or skirts/pinafores

4 - 5 pairs of socks

1 pair of school shoes

1 tie (if needed)

1 school coat

1 'regulation' blazer (if specified on the uniform list)

Check out our school uniform shopping guide for more advice on where to shop and what to buy.

PE kit

1 - 2 pairs of shorts

1-2 T-shirts

1-2 pairs of socks

1 swimming costume/trunks (if necessary)

1 pair of plimsolls

Bags

1 book bag (usually sold by the school)/rucksack

1 lunch box or bag

1 PE kit bag

Extras

Name labels and stickers. You'll want to label everything from socks to calculators!

Pencil case with pencil, pen, coloured crayons, ruler, pencil sharpener and rubber (older children may also need a calculator)

Drinks bottle (if not included in lunch box)

Meet The 20-Somethings Helping Women Wave The 'Quarter-Life Crisis' Goodbye

$

Once you hit your mid-twenties, most people fit into one of two camps.

You're either unemployed and doing interminable internships trying to land your dream job or you're already on the career ladder but feel completely overworked and overwhelmed.

This period of uncertainty has been dubbed the "quarter life crisis".

This isn't mere navel-gazing either; with large numbers of graduates suffering from anxiety, depression and low moods, it seems the Millennials may be the worst affected to date.

Saskia Roddick and Jo Duncombe, both 27, are no exception.

Last year, when Saskia returned from a summer teaching English and Drama in France, she felt utterly lost. At 26, she was juggling a whole host of different projects and, with little support available and a long autumn of potential unemployment, she was unsure of how to proceed.

At about the same time, Jo had started working in an area she'd always wanted to work in: as an event curator for a film festival. But, as her 'to do' list stacked up, she started working all hours under the sun and "had no time to breathe".

Eventually the pair, who have been best friends since university, admitted to one another that they were struggling and, after talking it through with others, they realised their experience was far from unusual.

the quarter club
Saskia Roddick (L) and Jo Duncombe

"A lot of our friends who had studied art degrees were falling into the same boat," Jo tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle. "They had amazing skills and education, but, unlike those who studied maths or medicine, they were being abandoned by any real sense of security."

"We soon realised that the solution to the problem might need to come from us," she says. "That speaks volumes about a generation who are increasingly having to find our own solutions."

Soon after The Quarter Club was born - a network for creative, ambitious women that hosts a variety of events in London designed to inspire, educate and connect.

the quarter club
The Quarter Club

The Quarter Club host quarterly Salons, where they invite speakers to talk for five minutes about a particular theme and, doing away with the archaic and rigid Q&A format, invite speakers to mingle with the audience in the bar. They also plan to run workshops, known as Quarter Labs, and regular forums, known as Pitching Parlours, where women can come armed with an idea or problem to discuss with other women.

"For freelancers in the creative industries there are no HR departments - so it's important to establish a base and network to provide structure and support," says Jo.

Although Saskia and Jo originally intended to aim at women between 25 and 30, they soon realised that anxiety related to having a freelance career was "ageless" - and so they did away with age limits.

"Feelings of uncertainty and moving forward are ageless," explains Saskia, who now works as an actress. "But the power of bringing women together who can support each-other emotionally, but also connect and trade with skills and knowledge - that is also ageless."

"Having women in a room together and talking is an incredibly empowering thing."

While the pair admit that career anxiety is not a female-specific problem, they believe that women are more likely to doubt themselves and so need more of a helping hand or support.

"Personally, I sometimes find it very hard to go for things," says Jo. "I have lots of self-doubt and I think in some respects that is the same for all women."

This is definitely true for actress Lotte Allan, who attended the first Salon event back in April. She was inspired by one of the speakers, comedian Kerry Howard, who told the audience about how she got into comedy and the importance of taking "baby steps".

Lotte eventually plucked up the courage to talk to Kerry, who gave her a leaflet for Funny Women, the UK's leading female comedy community.

Lotte went along to an open mic night, where women can "try stand-up, write sketches or just talk through an idea". Before long she was booked onto her first stand-up gig, for a friend's charity fundraiser.

"I’d been collecting material for years so actually putting something together wasn’t too challenging. It wasn’t like I had to do a full hour at the Apollo, it was just ten minutes," she says. "Nevertheless, it was terrifying and I felt sick, but I did it. People laughed. People said it was good.

"And you know what… I’m going to do it again."

Jo and Saskia first had the idea for The Quarter Club last year and started hosting supper clubs in December ("I personally think food and Prosecco are the perfect ice breaker," jokes Saskia) and from there they've tried to grow as organically as possible.

The pair asked each supper club attendee to nominate four new people to help grow the network.

Add that to their existing circles and the huge support they've had on Twitter, and it's no wonder their first Salon event, the theme of which was 'Courage', sold out fast.

Over the next twelve months they hope to get The Quarter Club's other strands up and running, but also find investment to be able to make the venture sustainable.

At the moment the pair are juggling other work commitments, having regular morning Skype sessions at 7am, but they hope to one day be able to spend more time on the project and expand it to the rest of the UK.

"We hope that it will become something we can spend a lot of time on, we’re really passionate about it," says Saskia. "It started with how we felt, but we’ve had an amazing response from other people just validates how much worth other people see in it.

"Rather than keep diagnosing these problems, the only way to move forward is to take action."

The Quarter Club's next Salon event is at Topolski Bar, 150-152 Hungerford Arches, Concert Hall Approach, London SE1 8XU. Find out more or purchase your ticket here.

Choosing your baby's name is possibly one of the biggest decisions you're going to make after you've given birth.

But fear not, this app aims to make the process a bit easier for you and avoid any arguments with your partner.

In the Tinder-style way of decision making, the app brings up baby name ideas and you can swipe right or swipe left depending on whether or not you like the name.

But it gets better than that...

baby name

Before browsing through the names on the app (which has a bank of 30,000), you and your partner can both download the app and "connect" together.

You then can look through the names separately and swipe right if you like the name, and left if you don't.

As an added bonus each name will also have the origin and meaning displayed on the screen before you make your decision about which direction to swipe.

When you and your partner both swipe right on a name the app will tell you it's a "match" and the name will be added to a shared list, so you'll never forget the names that you once agreed on.

If anything, it might make the sometimes stressful decision that bit more fun, and means not all of your face-to-face conversations will solely be focused on the baby name dilemma...

Mexican Singer Whose 'Sanitary Towel Fell Out Mid-Performance' Claims It Was Actually Kleenex Tissue

Mexican singer Patricia Navidad became a viral sensation when it appeared a sanitary towel fell from under her dress while she was on stage performing.

But less than a day after a video of the incident took over our newsfeeds, Navidad has spoken out, claiming all is not as it first seemed.

The singer was praised for keeping a cool head and continuing to perform while the pad lay next to her feet - but it turns out it may not have been a sanitary product at all.

The 42-year-old has taken to Twitter to say it was not a sanitary pad, but a tissue from her armpit (that she used to stop sweating) that fell.

The tweets come after Navidad was praised for her initial reaction to criticism, where she pointed out that wearing a sanitary pad when you are on your period is not a big deal.

She suggested that if a sanitary product does ever accidentally fall on the floor, a woman shouldn't be made to feel ashamed about it.

Translated, Navidad had this to say to those who were mocking her: "They say a man who treats women as princesses has been raised by a queen, those who attack and offend, who educated you? It is neither shameful nor anything to be ashamed of.

"Too bad all the men that were making fun [of the incident] weren’t there [at the venue], because I would’ve loved to have smeared it on their face."

She ended with a good-humoured pun on a sanitary towel.

"I'm not a boxer, I'm a warrior, and I never throw in the towel, unless I don't need it anymore."

Whooping Cough Baby Filmed To Alert Parents About Importance Of Vaccinating Their Children

A heartbreaking video of a young baby with whooping cough has received thousands of views, showing parents the devastating effects of not vaccinating their children.

Whooping cough - technically called pertussis - is a highly contagious bacterial and respiratory infection of the lungs and airways which causes vomiting.

The video, uploaded by Mayo Clinic in USA on YouTube, shows a baby girl struggling to breathe and unable to control her coughing while being cradled by her mother in an Intensive Care Unit.

baby

The baby, cradled in her mother's arms, begins to cry during the two-minute video and the distinct 'whooping' sound can be seen when she tries to breathe in again following a coughing fit.

Near the end, the young baby slowly begins to regain her breath, stops crying and manages to fall asleep in her mother's arms.

The video, which has 568,000 views, is a harsh reminder than getting babies vaccinated against whooping cough could save their lives.

According to the NHS, the condition usually begins with a persistent dry and irritating cough that progresses to intense bouts of coughing.

The gasping for breath after one of these coughing bouts causes a distinctive "whooping" noise, which is how the condition gets its name.

Other symptoms, the NHS states, include a runny nose, raised temperature and vomiting after coughing.

The coughing can last for around three months, and babies under 12 months are at greater risk of catching whooping cough unless they have had two doses of the vaccine at four months old.

Jeremy Hunt's Comments On NHS Prompts Father To Share Heartbreaking Photo Of Premature Son

A father who was angered by Jeremy Hunt's comments that the NHS has a 'Monday to Friday culture' has shared a photo of his premature son who was saved by the "miracle workers" at the NHS.

Michael Simpson's son JJ was born 16 weeks early to mum Carla Walker and weighed just 1lb and 9oz.

But thanks to the hard-working NHS staff, his son defied the odds to survive at Nottingham City Hospital's neonatal unit.

Three months on, Simpson, 37, from Boston, Lincolnshire, decided to share the image of his extremely poorly son born on 28 April with a message to the health secretary.

Where are you today Jeremy Hunt (Health Secretary)? Bet your not at work!!! Well there are numerous amazing NHS staff,...

Posted by Michael Simpson on Sunday, 19 July 2015

On the photo, Simpson wrote: "Where are you today Jeremy Hunt (Health Secretary)? Bet you're not at work!

"Well there are numerous amazing NHS staff, consultants, doctors and nurses amongst others that are looking after my son and millions of others at weekends and out of hours, get a grip and support them rather than moaning that they don't work weekends.

"Please please like and share this post if you support our amazing NHS staff."

The photo was shared 4,000 times since being uploaded on 19 July.

His wife commented on the photo: "NHS are overworked and underpaid they are miracle workers - that prat needs to give them a break!"

Simpson told the Mirror: "It's taken me a long time to share this picture publicly because of how much it hurts.

"But I was just so angry reading about Jeremy Hunt's comments I had to do something.

"On a weekend, he is probably sitting at home, enjoying time with his family."

Simpson praised the NHS stuff for saving his son's like "so many times" over the last 12 weeks that he has lost count.

Simpson and his wife travel 120 miles to Nottingham every day to see JJ - who is battling chronic lung disease.

He added: "We've seen first hand how hard NHS staff work. They are there all hours of the day and night, seven days a week.

"They are true miracle workers."

"Thank you to everyone who is sharing this, without the doctors and nurses who have worked tirelessly around the clock seven days a week our precious son wouldn't even be here, NHS staff, you will always hold a special place in our hearts."

The new father later shared a photo of his son, now three months old.

He wrote: "91 days into our journey and I think our little man is beginning to get a little tired too."

Mum Of Teen Who Suffered Severe Sunburn On School Trip Says Teachers Are Not To Blame

The mother of a 13-year-old boy who suffered severe sunburn while on a school trip to Spain has said it was her own son's fault, not the teachers'.

Joshua Cunnah, 13, got badly burnt during a trip to a waterpark along with three other pupils from Buile Hill Visual Arts College, in Salford.

One of the four children's parents criticised the teachers, but Wendy Cunnah has backed the school, believing the staff did all they could.

Cunnah, a nursery nurse, told Manchester Evening News: "The children were told numerous times to put suncream on by the teachers.

"My son had Factor 30 which I had packed for him. He put it on before he got to the waterpark and again once he got there.

"But he was having such a good time on the slides, he then forgot to put it on again. He accepts full responsibility."

back

Upon returning to England, the four pupils all required treatment at the burns unit of the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Four teachers accompanied the 41 pupils on holiday and headteacher James Inman said the staff did everything they could to warn the children of dangers of being in the sun.

Cunnah said her son called her from Spain to tell her of his burns and she still believes the teachers "could not have done more".

After returning from the trip, another pupil Connor Pritchard, 15, had large blisters on his arm.

His mother, Estelle Pritchard, 37, told The Mirror: "When he stepped off the coach I could see the bulge of the blisters on his arm. He tried to lift his shirt up and I broke down when I saw the burns.

"No teacher hung around to speak to me. I just took one look and said 'right lets get you to hospital'."

Mrs Pritchard called it "total neglect" on the part of the teachers.

The headteacher at Buile Hill Visual Arts College said the school may have to review school trips if children refuse to follow instructions.

School governor and Labour councillor, John Warmisham, told Manchester Evening News: "We have learned a lesson with this trip, but I do think the school did everything it could.

"Parents has to sign contracts before they went which mentioned children had to apply Factor 50 when told to do so."

Prince George beams at the camera in a new photo released by Kensington Palace ahead of his second birthday.

The picture, taken by Mario Testino at Princess Charlotte's christening shows Prince George leaning towards the camera from the arms of the Duke Of Cambridge.

Kensington Palace tweeted the picture, by Mario Testino, alongside the caption: "Look who's turning two tomorrow! #HappyBirthdayPrinceGeorge".

To mark George's second birthday the family are reportedly planning to hold a low-key celebration at their Anmer Hall country retreat on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

Guests are expected to include George's great-grandmother the Queen, Michael and Carole Middleton along with George's aunt and uncle Pippa and James Middleton.

Woman Launches Feminist, Intersectional Magazine About Periods (And No, It's Not A Monthly)

Periods. Approximately half the world's population get them, and yet they remain a taboo subject which is seldom discussed.

Thankfully one woman hopes to change that. Soofiya Andry, 23, has launched her own 'zine (think of it as a small, self-published, low-cost magazine), called Bloody Hell, that will focus on periods and experiences of menstruation, which hopes to break down current societal taboos.

bloody hell

"Often the narrative surrounding menstruation is shameful and treated like something to hide," she tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle. "I wanted to readdress that. My only real aim was to capture people’s stories of menstruation."

In recent months, with the outrage over artist Rupi Kaur's censored period photograph and discussions around homeless women's experiences of menstruation, conversations are certainly beginning to shift. But Soofiya says a lot needs to be done to make menstruation an inclusive space.

Discussions around periods, or "period talk" as she describes it, is dominated by white cisgender women ('cisgender' meaning where an individual is assigned the correct gender at birth eg. a woman who identifies as female, in comparison to 'transgender' where an individual's biological sex and gender do not match at birth).

"There are people of all genders who menstruate," says Soofiyak, who is Muslim Pakistani. "I have non-binary and trans friends who have uteruses and menstruate but don’t define necessarily as ‘women’. So when mainstream media and people use phrases like ‘lady time’ or ‘women’s problems’ it's often very alienating."

Her zine hopes to counter that, with inclusivity and intersectionality being central to the project.

bloody hell

Soofiya, who is a graphic designer and MA student, always wanted Bloody Hell to be collaborative effort, calling on friends and her wider networks to contribute.

"There’s quite a diverse mix of people who submitted, including trans and non-binary people. I’m also a woman of colour as are few other contributors, so there’s a nice mix of cultures in the zine too," she says.

"One submission was from a lovely person who did a photography project based on a vampiric ghost in Malay folklore called ‘Pontianak’. It was really refreshing to see how menstruation is considered cross cultures and in folklore too."

"I’d like the next issue to be even more diverse than this one."

bloody hell
A menstruation playlist from Bloody Hell

Soofiya has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), something she says she wouldn't have been able to detect if she didn't feel able to discuss her periods. This is something she wants to empower other women to do.

"PCOS can affect how you menstruate, among many of the symptoms," she says. "I’ve been on and off pills to deal with the symptoms. It’s gotten worse for me in the past year or so. I’m working with my GP to help keep things in hand, but it’s tricky.

"I guess, in way this project is a nice little cathartic release for my experiences with menstruation and PCOS."

Budget Bum Lift Leaves Mum In Agony On Channel 5 Show Botched Up Bodies: 'It Looks As If I've Been Bitten By A Shark'

When Heidi Faulkner lost half her body weight, she was left with an unexpected, unwanted side effect.

The property manager, from Hertfordshire, found herself with excess skin around her bum and legs, so jetted off abroad for "booty lift" plastic surgery .

But instead of getting the toned physique she desired, the budget procedure left the mum-of-one with diagonal scars across her buttocks.

The surgeon had removed too much fat, meaning that in the weeks after surgery, Faulkner even found it difficult to sit down.

Faulkner, 36, had been unhappy with her size for years when she decided to lose weight.

"I overate, I didn't exercise. I was in foster home and what not and I wasn't taught to look after myself," she explains in Channel 5 show Botched Up Bodies.

Faulkner says it used to take her a month of planning to find an outfit to wear on a night out before she lost weight, because it was hard to find clothes she liked in her size.

"I didn't want to be the fat girl out with my skinny mates," she says.

After trying "every diet going" and even giving hypnosis a try, Faulkner opted to have a gastric band fitted by a surgeon here in the UK. The band helped her to halve her body weight and she went from 16 stone to eight stone.

Although she was initially thrilled with the results, a leak in the gastric band meant Faulkner soon began to put weight on again.

The band was fixed and Faulkner lost the weight again, but her fluctuation in size left her with excess skin around her legs and bum.

"My little boy actually said to me: 'Mum, it looks like your bum's melted'," she says.

Knowing that going to the gym wasn't going to shift the skin, Faulkner turned to surgery for a second time. But as bum life procedures cost £4,296 on average in the UK, she flew to Prague in the hope of having the same procedure at a fraction of the cost.

But when her bandages were removed after surgery, Faulkner was in for a shock.

"It looked as if a shark has come and bitten my bottom and taken a chunk away," she says.

"I remember hearing someone screaming and then realising it was me."

Faulkner now has diagonal scars across her buttocks and says she regrets having the cheap surgery. She wants others to know the dangers budget procedures aboard can hold.

"I didn't want to be embarrassed my myself anymore,"she says. "But by me trying to put that right, I've just created bigger problems."

Heidi Faulkner appears on Botched Up Bodies, Tuesday night at 10pm on Channel 5.

Do Men Or Women Have A Higher Tolerance To Pain? This Experiment Finds Out

Contrary to popular belief that women have a higher pain tolerance than men in order to prepare them for the scream-inducing nightmare that is childbirth, some studies have shown that men are actually better at handling pain than women.

To put the debate to rest once and for all, six men and six women agreed to have their pain endurance levels put to the test.

In the above video, each volunteer is timed as they put their hand in a bowl of water filled with ice.

The men pondered their way through the pain...

While the women took a more practical approach...

"It feels like when I go on a run - where it starts out really terrible and I really don't want to be there. Then after a while you're like: 'Well, this is just the pain I feel for now, so I might as well keep feeling it'."

At the end of the experiment, the volunteers' times were analysed.

The women spent an average of 96.3 seconds with their hands in the ice water, while the men spent an impressive 111.3 seconds in ice - making them the winners.

But remember, the BuzzFeed team tried the ice water test in a controlled environment with experts on hand, so don't try this endurance test at home.
