Why You Should Never Leave Your Dog In A Car - It's Been Scientifically Proven

$
0
0
September is here, summer is over and unless we're going to witness an Indian summer (which is pretty unlikely) then it's perfectly acceptable to leave your dog in the car now that temperatures have cooled, right?

Actually, that's completely wrong.

According to the RSPCA, when it’s 22°C (72°F) outside, the temperature inside a car can reach up to 47°C within 60 minutes. In other words, your dog will start to cook - an action that can not only create serious health problems for your pooch, but can potentially prove fatal.

A study conducted in 2002 found that the temperature inside an enclosed car rose 19°F in just 10 minutes. The study also found that opening the windows didn't reduce or delay this increase.

The RSPCA suggests that certain breeds of dog will be more prone to suffering from heatstroke than others. For example: dogs with short snouts, fatter/muscly dogs, long-haired breeds, old/young dogs and dogs with certain diseases or that are on medication.

According to PETA, animals can sustain brain damage, or even die, from heatstroke in just 15 minutes.

Put simply, the time it takes you to pop into the supermarket on the way home.

Our advice? If you're going out and you won't be able to take your dog(s) with you (for example, to a restaurant or shopping centre) then leave them at home where it's cool - they'll thank you for it (with a lick, or something).

Finally, if you ever think that your pet (or somebody else's pet) might be suffering from heatstroke then the RSPCA suggest there are a number of things you can do to try and cool them down:

:: Immediately douse them with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock – you could use a shower, or spray and place them in the breeze of a fan.

:: Let them drink small amounts of cool water.

:: Continue dousing until their breathing settles – never cool dogs so much that they begin shivering.

:: Once your dog is cool, immediately go to the vet.

To conclude, dog's are cool - let's keep them that way. #SayNoToHotDogs

Meet The New Freaky 'Surprize' Apple Developed By Tesco

Move over Pink Ladies, there's a new - and some might say, more colourful - apple on the block.

A new breed of yellow and orange-skinned apples with pink (yes pink!) flesh has been developed by an award-winning fruit grower from Hereford.

The bizarre-looking foodstuff, which will be trialled by 120 Tesco stores as of tomorrow, has been hailed as a "real head-turner". We can certainly see why.

The unusual variety, which is aptly named Surprize, has been bred by apple expert William Barnett at a farm in Tillington, near Hereford.

Tesco fruit product developer Ciara Grace said: "This apple literally stops people in their tracks on account of its unusual pale orange and yellow skin.

"This is the first time that it's ever gone on sale and there are only limited supplies but if it's a success we will stock it again next year."

We're not sure whether the pink interior is more off-putting than anything else, but we guess the pretty colours might just help to coax children to get their seven-a-day?

Cheese, Yogurt And Milk Could Hold The Secret To Lowering Diabetes Risk

If you love your dairy, then today could be your day, as new research suggests that eating high-fat dairy food is great for lowering your health risk of diabetes.

yoghurt and berries

Dairy-lovers who consume eight or more portions of high-fat dairy produce each day are at lower risk of developing diabetes than those who have just one portion a day.

A study of almost 27,000 people aged between 45 and 74 (60% of whom were female) showed that those who increased their intake of foods including cream and high-fat milk had a 23% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

While there was an increased risk with a greater intake of meats, that risk became higher for those who took meat containing less fat, the study by Dr Ulrika Ericson and her colleagues at the Lund University Diabetes Centre in Malmo, Sweden, claimed.

Dr Ericson said the research, presented at this year's annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Vienna, showed fats specific to dairy products "may have a role in prevention of type 2 diabetes".

She said: "Our observations may contribute to clarifying previous findings regarding dietary fats and their food sources in relation to T2D (type 2 diabetes).

"The decreased risk at high intakes of high-fat dairy products, but not of low-fat dairy products, indicate that dairy fat, at least partly, explains observed protective associations between dairy intake and T2D.

Dr Richard Elliot, Diabetes UK Research Communications Manager, said more research is needed and warned people against adding high fat dairy products to their diets in a bid to protect against type 2 diabetes.

"Consumption of dairy products can form part of a healthy diet, but it's important to be aware of the amount you consume as they can be high in calories which can contribute to becoming overweight, and therefore increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

"More research will be needed before we change our advice that the best way to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes is by maintaining a healthy weight through increased physical activity and a balanced diet that is low in salt, saturated fat and sugar and rich in fruit and vegetables."

Autumn Home Trends That Won't Go Out Of Fashion

As autumn arrives, we're not only rethinking our wardrobes (out with the sandals, in with the boots), we're also wondering how to integrate new-season home trends (that are timeless and won't go out of fashion) into our interiors.

"As the seasons change so too do our tastes," explains Sigma London senior designer, Urszula Russek. "With a small design touch or refresh to reflect the seasons, we are able to enliven and revitalise our homes throughout the year without a complete overhaul."

Easy ways to add an autumnal feel to your space? Russek recommends adding cosy touches to your home - a thick, colourful rug, heavyweight curtains and downy pillows all add a comforting update, while something as simple as dimming the lights changes the ambiance of your home.

"Remember, low level light will make the space feel cosy and welcoming, so turn off the main lights this autumn," Russek advises.

Another way to change your space to stay in tune with the new season is with colour, says interior designer and founder of the Anna Casa showroom in London's Mayfair, Anna Grace Davidtson.

"During the autumn months of the year it is a big trend to update the home with the colour palette of the season. Rich in gorgeous natural shades such as warm beige, golden brown and sage green, these are all hues which can be incorporated into the scheme of a home.

"However, the season also lends itself well to more neutral shades which offer an easy and timeless subtlety," she explains.

#VogueArticles: Twitter Hits Back After Vogue Said 'Big Booties' Are Fashionable

What's a sure fire way to piss off half of Twitter? Write an article stating big bums are en trend...

Last week Vogue published an article online which said: "the big booty has officially become ubiquitous."

According to writer Patricia Garcia, big bottoms are currently fashionable thanks to celebs like Rose McGowan, Iggy Azalea, Jen Selter and Kim Kardashian.

"The measure of sex appeal is inextricably linked to the prominence of a woman's behind," she writes.

When we read Garcia's article, the team here at HuffPost UK Lifestyle were pretty disturbed by the idea that a body part could go in and out of fashion, and it seems we weren't the only ones questioning Vogue's piece.

Members of the public have taken to Twitter to criticise the fashion magazine by using the hashtag #VogueArticles.

While some used the hashtag to point out that a body can not be a trend...

Others slammed Vogue for suggesting white women have made big bums acceptable...

And soon, Twitter was full of fake Vogue headlines...

Sorry Vogue, but you really got it wrong this time.

Ismena Clout, Inspirational Secondary Breast Cancer Patient And Campaigner, Passes Away

Ismena Clout, a beloved HuffPost UK blogger and breast cancer campaigner who had incurable secondary breast cancer, has passed away from the disease aged 40.

Ismena inspired us every day with her endless optimism, her determination to enjoy her life and not allow cancer to overshadow her every waking moment.

It is extremely poignant that in her last blog, where she wrote about a health scare, she said: "...the answer to the fingers of death is no, I don't feel like this is the beginning of the end, it's a kick up the arse to get my determination back."

We first came across the amazing Ismena because she had chosen to have a tattoo (or a tittoo as she called them) over her mastectomy scar. That she spoke to us from her hospital bed was nothing short of amazing, but then this fierce, unbowed woman wouldn't have it any other way.

Speaking to Brogan Driscoll about what it was like to live with cancer, she said: "To be honest, it feels like the forgotten part of the disease. The focus is overwhelmingly centred on primary breast cancer: year-long treatment cycles and survivor stories. Secondary breast cancer, with end stages and dying, is largely unspoken about.

"People can live for years with secondary breast cancer, but it affects quality of life. The treatments make you nauseous and you can't take holidays."

ismena clout

Ismena was the youngest honorary chair for the British Institute For Facilities Management and worked in facilities. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and then re-diagnosed in 2010. She had her breasts and her ovaries removed as a result of the disease, but refused to let it define her as a woman.

"The ultimate symbols of femininity are breasts and long hair. And this is precisely what cancer takes away from you - in my case, it was taken twice. But, while I may no longer have breasts or ovaries, I am still very much a woman," she said.

People are starting to pay tribute on Twitter:

We remember Ismena for her grace, her courage in the face of inevitable death and the dignity she brought to everything she said and wrote.

In her memory and to support the hospice that helped her, you can donate to St Raphael’s Hospice and leave a message of remembrance.

HPV Cervical Cancer Jab Could Prevent Almost 90 Deaths Every Year

The lives of almost 90 teenage girls could be saved each year if nearly all teenage girls in the UK were given the HPV jab, which prevents cervical cancer.

cervical cancer vaccine

The UK-based vaccination programme, which launched in 2008, targets teenage girls aged 12-13.

Experts have said that if 96% of girls decided to have the vaccine, which protects against the human papilloma virus, then 198 cervical cancer cases and 87 deaths could be prevented every year.

The figures from researchers at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which are being presented to Public Health England's annual conference in Warwick, show that the national uptake of the vaccine stands at around 86%.

But there are wide regional variations of uptake with just 62% of girls in some areas receiving the jab and 96% of girls being vaccinated in others.

Experts at the drug company said that if uptake across the whole of England matched the best regions then 2,528 cases of pre-cancerous cells that need treatment could be prevented, as well as the cases of cervical cancer and the deaths from the disease.

Dr Michael England, medical director for vaccines at GSK, said: "These figures make it clear that, even though we have relatively high uptake of the HPV vaccine, we could make a dramatic difference by making simple improvements to the programme.

Story continues below...

"Treatment for cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions can be traumatic and have long-lasting effects among women affected by the disease, who are often relatively young.

"By focusing on reducing regional variation and increasing uptake across the country within the existing programme, we have the potential to save even more lives and prevent women from undergoing treatment for what is now largely a preventable disease."

Your Hands Are Dirtier Than Public Surfaces, In Fact 25% Of You Have Faecal Fragments

We're feeling a sudden and overwhelming desire to wear surgical gloves for the rest of our lives. The reason? A study has revealed that our hands are actually dirtier than public surfaces, which is certainly not good news for our health.

hand hygiene

Did you know that faecal matter is present on 26% of hands in the UK?

In addition to that delightful piece of information, the average person carries over 10 million bacteria on their hands, in comparison to just 33,000 found on public surfaces. That's a staggering 30,203% more bacteria on your hands. *Shudders*

In new research conducted by Aquaint, 25 swabs were taken from multiple high street and shopping centre locations, collected from surfaces including tables, public benches, escalator handrails, high chairs and children’s ride-on toys.

The samples were then laboratory tested for a range of harmful bacteria including staphylococcus, E.coli and enterobacteriaceae, which have all been linked to illnesses and deaths.

The overall quantity of bacteria measured in public spaces was actually relatively low – 33,000 in the worst example, from a wooden public bench. Whereas, the average person carries over 10 million bacteria on the hands alone.

Alongside this study, Aquaint polled members of the public on habits and attitudes to germs.

Unsurprisingly, 92% of those polled said they would avoid dirty looking tables and seats, citing health as the primary concern. By contrast, only 13% said they would avoid eating unless they had washed or cleansed their hands. URGH!

Story continues below...

This indifference towards hand washing tallies with research by Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in 2012, which found that faecal matter is present on 26% of hands in the UK. By the way, faecal matter is rife with germs – around one billion per gram.

The UN estimates that hand washing alone could save more than a million lives a year from diarrhoeal diseases and prevent respiratory infections - so, why aren't we washing our hands more?

Bola Lafe, founder of Aquaint water-based sanitiser, says: “This study highlights the fact that people avoid what they believe will make them unwell when in fact public surfaces contain less harmful bacteria than we think.

"Our hands operate a highly effective public transport network for bacteria and viruses and germs can be easily transmitted. During the course of a day, we all touch hundreds of surfaces and mixed attitudes to hand washing may be at the root of the problem.

"Other people’s hand hygiene is totally out of our control so rather than just avoiding certain areas or surfaces, good hand hygiene for everyone should be the top priority.

"Our hands are in frequent contact with our mouths or with items that we put into our mouths, making them the fastest route to illness."

Lafe added: “we strongly recommend that Brits look at their own hand hygiene habits and cleanse their hands regularly during the day; before and after eating, after using the toilet and when coming into contact with other hands, e.g. shaking hands.”

Chinese City Opens Mobile Phone Lane For Pedestrians

When you're engrossed in a good Twitter session, walking along the pavement without knocking over a small child can be challenging.

But one city may have found the solution to this tricksy problem.

Rather than recommending their phone-loving population try out a digital detox, the authorities in Chongqing, China, appear to have painted a designated mobile phone lane on one of their roads.

china cellphone pavement

A sign at the top of the road says the 100ft stretch marks the “first mobile phone sidewalk in China."

In a statement, Nong Cheng, the marketing official with Meixin Group which manages the area, said: "There are lots of elderly people and children in our street, and walking with your cellphone may cause unnecessary collisions here."

china cellphone pavement

Nong said the idea came from a similar stretch of pavement in Washington DC created by National Geographic Television in July as part of a behavior experiment.

Although the idea does sound practical, we can't help but wonder if the new lanes will only make our technology addictions worse.

Call us old fashioned, but wouldn't we be better switching off our devices and actually looking at where we're walking?

What do you think of the mobile phone lanes? Let us know by answering the poll below:

Woman With Vitiligo Undergoes State Of The Art Treatment To Reverse The Condition

A woman who suffers from a rare skin condition has said she feels "absolutely fantastic" after beginning a new treatment.

Lisa Johnson developed vitiligo when she was a child - the rare skin condition has left with white patches all over her body.

But a new treatment and a state of the art makeover could be about to change that.

lisa 1

She said: “It’s a condition which causes my skin to turn a different colour. I now have white patches covering more than a third of my body.”

Vitiligo is not life threatening but its psychological effects can be devastating to sufferers.

Lisa had a happy childhood until she noticed a white mark on her body - she had no idea what was to come or how fast it would spread.

She said: “I noticed it when I was around 7 years old, then it developed on to my leg and it just kept spreading.”

Lisa was bullied throughout school because of her skin, and after 17 years of suffering, she has turned to a skin specialist for help.

Dr Pearl Grimes said: “This condition dramatically affects quality of life. It can interfere with a person’s physical and mental wellbeing with devastating effects.

“But there is hope available for Lisa, I’m recommending a course of Narrowband UV light therapy which should re-colour her skin.”

lisa 3

The therapy could take some time to take effect, so in the short term Lisa has been given a specialist cover-up product.

A computer generates a special formula after analysing images of Lisa’s skin and it tells a dermatologist how much of each colour to use to cover over the white patches.

lisa 2

After the procedure, Lisa said: “It just feels absolutely fantastic – to see the smile on my sister’s face when she saw me really warms my heart and my soul. I feel like I can be me again.”

Lisa's story appears in a new series of Body Bizarre, which airs every Thursday at 9pm on TLC

Model Spends Thousands On Plastic Surgery To Look Like A Sex Doll, Says She's Happy And Confident

We've heard of people who undergo plastic surgery to look like Barbie, Ken and Jennifer Lawrence, but we're stumped at the latest motivator from model Victoria Wild: she aims to emulate the exaggerated look of a sex doll.

Victoria has blown a staggering £30k on rhinoplasty, permanent lip implants, botox and three breast implant surgeries taking her to a size 32G. The 30-year-old even has plans for butt implants and three further breast augmentations.

The model has paid for the surgery through her earnings, but has also been helped by her wealthy boyfriend.

Before and after the surgery

Victoria says: “Who wouldn’t want to be treated like a bimbo doll? It’s such a sexy look. People stare at me in the street and I love the way I stand out.”

Victoria says her obsession with looking like a doll began whilst she was a teenager in Latvia.

She says, “I had a very normal childhood, living in a small village in the countryside. I was very slim and blonde and people would call me Barbie. But I hated my small A cup boobs. I didn’t like myself or the way I looked. I had an inferiority complex.

“I didn’t know about plastic surgery at that age but I would always dream about resembling a sexy bimbo doll with huge breasts and insanely big lips.

“I loved the way dolls looked and how sexy they were. They are so bright and bold. It was this fantasy in my head.”

Victoria - before the surgery

However when Victoria began working as a glamour model at the age of twenty, she became aware of cosmetic surgery.

“I learned about boob jobs and plastic surgery. I realised it was possible to make my dreams come true. I could become the sexy, bimbo doll I had always envisioned in my head.”

Victoria started saving up her earnings from modeling work so she could afford a first breast augmentation.

When she was twenty-five, she met her boyfriend Simon who encouraged Victoria’s dreams of looking like a sex doll.

She explains: “Simon is a successful businessman and he loves the bombshell, plastic look too. He offered to help me financially with the surgery and motivated me to achieve my goal.”

In 2011, Victoria had her first surgical procedure to alter her body, undergoing three £25,000 boob jobs in Hungary to become her dream 32G size.

In 2014, Victoria also underwent a £3,000 rhinoplasty to resemble the smaller, thinner nose of a plastic doll. She also started having lip implants and botox which have altogether cost over £2,000.

She says, “Now I feel happier and more confident than I’ve ever felt before.

“Simon loves my sex doll look. I’m a bombshell now. People look at me in the street and men absolutely adore me. Simon’s so proud of the attention I get.

“I get more glamour model work because how I look too. I would love to become famous for being a sex doll.”

She may be a Bollywood actress but Deepika Padukone spoke for all women when she took on a leery tweet from The Times of India about her cleavage. Her stand against sexism saw 8,000 retweets and the #IstandWithDeepikaPadukone hashtag was trending on Twitter.

The newspaper posted a picture of Padukone's breasts - see below - which the actress screengrabbed and replied: "Supposedly India's LEADING newspaper and this is NEWS?":

She then added:

You'd think the newspaper would issue an apology, but in the same manner of a groper saying his victim should be glad of the attention, they responded that it was meant as a compliment.

If it really was a Compliment, then why you deleted that tweet? #IStandWithDeepika #FindingFanny pic.twitter.com/7GIM5YsKOp— Sir Ravindra Jadeja (@SirJadeja) September 14, 2014

Sexism isn't just rife in India of course, it's a global issue. But in a country where it is officially the worst place in the world to be a woman (yes, even ahead of Saudi Arabia, it is becoming increasingly important that Bollywood stars - who are viewed as virtual gods by the masses - take these issues head on.

Last October reported the BBC, actress Mallika Sherawat refused to retract her statement that "Indian society is regressive for women", which led to a heated clash with a reporter.

Padukone's point is a valid one. And if Times of India sincerely think that they were paying her a compliment, perhaps it's one they should extend to male celebrities with the caption: "OMG, so-and-so is having a great ballbag day!!"
