Woman Has Leg Amputated After Developing Flesh-Eating Bug From Infected Mosquito Bite

A woman had to have her leg amputated at the hip after she contracted a flesh-eating bug from an infected mosquito bite.

But remarkably Jodie Francis said – despite not having a leg – she "finally feels whole".

The 44-year-old told how she was taking down Halloween decorations in late 2012 when she began getting pains in her left leg.

"It was a couple of days after Hurricane Sandy hit", said Francis, of Edison, New Jersey.

"I was up and down my ladder getting down the Halloween décor, cleaning my gutter and bagging all of the pine needles and I started getting pains in my left leg, like I’d badly pulled a muscle."

jodie francis

The pain got so bad that a few days later she could not walk and her boss at the events management company where she worked sent her home.

Francis continued: "The following day I spiked a really high temperature. I couldn’t sleep, eat, or even find a position which lessened the pain.

"By the time my husband Henry, now 43, came home at 11.30pm, I said ‘I feel horrible. I think I need to go to hospital’.

"My niece Brianna and nephew Joey were staying with us at the time – we had power and they didn’t due to the storm – so Henry stayed with them."

Juvenile corrections officer Francis was taken to Robert Wood Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Hours later a rash started developing.

"Suddenly I looked down at my arms and they were covered in hives," she continued. "I mean, hives on hives – I couldn’t see any unaffected skin.

"The last thing I remember was doctors saying my blood pressure had dropped dangerously low.

"I was put on a ventilator, which I ripped out – though I don’t recall this – and they had to put it back in."

francis

A doctor noticed a black mark on Francis’ leg and drew around it with a marker. Within 30 minutes, he checked it and the mark had spread.

On the morning of 5 November 2012 she was rushed to surgery, unaware of what was about to happen.

When surgeons opened up Francis’ leg to check the damage, they discovered she had necrotising fasciitis.

"Apparently looking into my leg was like looking at a pool of dirty dishwater," she said.

"There was nothing left in there. I had contracted necrotising fasciitis – and it was taking over my whole body. My kidneys had shut down, my liver was on its way out and my BP was down to 60.

"They were forced to amputate my leg at the hip, to save my life. If they hadn’t I’d have died, simple as that.

"My mother and other relatives were waiting in a corridor for some news. When a surgeon told her, her daughter had just lost her leg at the hip, she says she screamed at the top of her voice.

"They had to take the whole group into a side-room to try and calm them down and explain more."

Flesh-eating disease, as the bacterial infection is also known, can be transmitted through the skin via a cut or wound. Eating through muscle tissue and fat, mostly in the arms and legs, it is fatal in 40-60% of cases.

She was placed a medically-induced coma, during which time doctors and nurses would pass her bed and express their surprise that she was still alive.

The medical team wanted to move her to the intensive care unit as they decided she was stable, but nurses advised Francis’ husband not to let them as they did not think she was ready.

"That day, Henry and our friends took it in shifts to stand in the doorway and refuse to let them move me," she said.

"On the same day, my femoral artery ruptured, and a nurse just happened to walk into the room, see what was going on and rushed me back to surgery."

There was a cardiac surgeon on the same floor that had been performing another emergency surgery was able to stop and save Francis’ life a second time.

“Had I been moved to medical ICU floor, I would have bled out in the lift on the way down,” she said. “I had a total of eight surgeries after that to make sure they cleaned the wound out."

When Francis was brought of the coma 11 days later, she had no idea she was missing a leg. Two days later, a consultant came to check on her.

"I was still very groggy and didn’t really know what was going on at all,” she said. "The doctor walked towards my bed, and when I looked at his glasses, I could see my reflection – and the stump where one of my legs should have been."

"I screamed out loud with the shock. I was like, okay…. Then my sister, husband came in. Jeanette, 42, said ‘Jodie, your leg doesn’t define you – you define you."

Francis spent a month in hospital, followed by in-patient rehab for two months, learning how to walk again with a crutch.

She started outpatient physical therapy in March 2013, received her first prosthetic that May, and became a volunteer at a rehabilitation hospital, so she could help other amputees.

Currently on her third prosthetic, Francis does not dwell on what happened.

"As horrible as this is, I don’t feel its worst thing ever happened to me," she said.

"That was losing my father, aged 13. He fell overboard while working on an oil rig, and drowned. I found inner strength I never knew I had.

"I set goals now I never did before. I’ve been blind in my right eye since birth, have never driven a car and now I’m determined to get my driving licence."

She has also taken up golf, wants to ride horses again and would love to go rock-climbing.

"I never had the ‘why me?’ moment. I defied so many odds.

"Now I have three mantras: it's okay to mourn your former life, just have the courage and strength to embrace your new reality – this can happen to anyone, at any time; it took me losing my leg to become a whole person and lastly, my amputation doesn't bother me… why should it bother you?"

Mother With ALS Defies Odds To Breastfeed Baby, Shares Story To Encourage Other Sufferers To Try

A mother who found out she was pregnant two weeks before being diagnosed with ALS has defied odds by breastfeeding her daughter.

Amanda Bernier posted her story in a moving post on Facebook to encourage other mothers to know they can "overcome anything".

Bernier visited the doctors in March 2014 at only 29 to discuss muscle twitching she had been experiencing.

She received the genetic test results confirming Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a sub-type of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) after finding out she was pregnant with her first child.

She was told doctors were unable to find any case studies where women with ALS had successfully breastfed their babies.

Nobody knew if I would be able to. My doctors could not find any case studies. Just lIke I knew that I would deliver a...

Posted by Amanda's Angels - ALS on Monday, 7 September 2015

Five months on from her diagnosis, Bernier was on a ventilator and stayed in the medical ICU until her daughter was born at 39 weeks via caesarean.

Bernier said the nurses understood how important it was for her to breastfeed and helped her successfully do it.

She wrote: "They were determined to help me give that gift to her. Peanut's [her daughter] nurse was incredible. She came up with ways to position the baby to nurse while I lied in bed.

"The lactation nurse visited me daily. Both nurses told me how lucky I was for how well she latched on. Peanut has an old soul; she knew what she had to do to make things work."

Bernier wrote that just like any other mum, she suffered with cracked and sore nipples, but persevered on.

She added: "The nurse was ecstatic as I started to produce a few drops more as time went on. I did not understand why as there was no doubt in my mind that my body could create milk.

"My family was shown how to position and latch the baby on me before coming home a week later. I can only imagine how awkward it was for my aunts to touch my breasts but they did it out of love for my daughter and me.

"They would prop her into position by using pillows and blankets. Everyone even had the patience to hold her on my top breast when I was lying sideways."

Bernier said she is freezing as much milk as possible so her daughter can still have breastmilk when she is gone.

She said she has managed to find a position, after trial and error, to pump milk not sitting upright.

Explaining this in the post, she said: "Two people hold the breastshield (cups) on my breasts.

"When they get full, an oral syringe with a pediatric NG tube is used to suck the milk out and is dispensed into a bottle.

"Having ALS is not how I pictured my life. It breaks my heart that I cant be the mother that I wanted to be. It crushes my soul that she wont have her mother for much longer and she will grow up with out me. However everything happens for a reason so I am glad that I will be by her side as her angel.

"Please share with someone who is considering to stop breastfeeding to let them know that they can overcome anything."

Since releasing the post and photo it has reached more than seven million people.

After receiving thousands of comments, Bernier wrote: "I have been thinking of what to say the past few days in response to my breastfeeding experience post going viral. But then I determined that there are not enough words to adequately express how thankful I am.

"I cant thank you enough for all of the sweet, encouraging comments and messages. I always make sure to 'like' every comment after I read it. I feel bad that I cant do so for these amazing comments."

Bernier and her husband Chris set up Amanda's Angels Facebook group when they found out they were expecting their first child.

They have since used the account to post updates on their life as a family. To find out more about their story, visit the page here.

Victoria Beckham Criticised For Using 'Skinny Models' In New York Fashion Week Show

With gingham prints, oversized florals and surfer-inspired designs galore, Victoria Beckham was praised for the collection she showcased at New York Fashion Week.

But while her style may have been applauded, many people were less than impressed with the former Spice Girl's choice of models.

Denise Hatton, chief executive of YMCA England, which is coordinating the Be Real body confidence campaign, called Beckham's show a "prime example of selecting models based on the outdated premise that the only way to sell products is by presenting an idealised view of the female body".

Meanwhile, journalist Piers Morgan described the models in Beckham's show as looking both "painfully thin" and "painfully miserable".

The reaction from the public on Twitter hasn't been much better.

victoria beckham spring summer 16

In his MailOnline column, Morgan said the models "looked in need of a damn good meal and a Joan Rivers joke book to remove the unrelenting scowl from their faces".

He went on to claimed that Beckham once objected to being called "Skeletal Spice" by the British press, on the grounds that it would put undue body image pressure on young women.

But, he said, she is now guilty of the exact same thing.

"What bothers me is that all the young kids will see the photos from her new show and think that’s how they want to look. Is this what she, or we, really want?," he wrote.

"A world of young women radiating sullen-faced misery and sporting bodies only one removed from size zero? I know I don’t want my own young daughter, only a few months away in age from Harper, growing up thinking that this is what she should aspire to."

Many on Twitter have echoed Morgan and Hatton's thoughts, by saying that "skinny" models should not feature in catwalk shows.

But not everyone agrees banning slim models is the right way to encourage healthy body image.

Rivkie Baum, editor of plus-size magazine SLiNK tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle: "The way to greater diversity and representation in fashion and the media is not to pit one type of body against another.

"Piers is right that the use of just very slim models both on the catwalk and within mainstream media gives many young girls unrealistic body ideals, but it is not about banishing very slim models altogether."

Baum adds that New York Fashion Week is "quickly becoming a leader in using a more diverse set of models", with a number of a curvy figures taking to the runway alongside their straight-size model counterparts this week, in shows such as the Chromat one.

She says: "It is these designers and catwalks that demonstrate to young girls that fashion and the media accepts different bodies and this will ultimately play a huge part in re-educating young women about the relationship they can form with themselves. Let's not use skinny-shaming as a way of calling for greater diversity."

Sarah Pedersen, a communications professor at Robert Gordon University, agrees that segregating plus-size and straight-size models is not helpful.

"It’s positive we have plus-size models but it’s not positive we’re not using them throughout fashion. It would be better if we had plus-size models within the general fashion industry rather than have some 'special area' for them," she told The Telegraph.

"It sends a message to women who are plus-size that they’re not normal. They can’t be involved in the real or normal fashion industry."

The Huffington Post UK has contacted Victoria Beckham for comment, but has yet to hear back at the time of publication.

A proud dad has tweeted his joy after granting his twin daughters' wish of wanting a Hulk princess birthday cake.

Brian Elton also uploaded the brilliant birthday cake on Imgur, which features the Hulk in a red tiara (we think) and huge purple sweetheart-neck gown.

We're not sure what we're happier about, the dad for being so proud that his daughters asked for a Hulk cake, or his daughters for asking for it in the first place.

View post on imgur.com

But who made the cake? We're not quite sure.

Tweeting his exciting news, Elton wrote: "My twin daughters asked for a Hulk Princess Cake for their birthday and my wife made it happen. Proud Poppa here."

However, uploading the photo to Imgur the dad wrote: "My 4-year old twin girls wanted a Hulk Princess cake for their birthday. So I made one!".

Whether it was him or his wife, we're very impressed.

Just a few weeks after hitting the VMAs red carpet in a show-stopping outfit that called out slut-shaming, model Amber Rose has starred in a viral video that encourages women to embrace their sexuality and be proud.

The 'Walk Of No Shame' video features the strident feminist proudly walking home after a night of passion, while clutching a bright pink pair of heels from the night before.

The 31-year-old wore a super sexy LBD to strut through a park, while onlookers stop to congratulate her on her conquest.

"You're an inspiration to my daughter," one man shouts.

A builder yells: "I respect that you enjoyed yourself last night. I think we can all agree, having sex is fun!"

Then the town mayor then presents Rose with 'the key to the city': "For the confidence in the choices you make and the ability to celebrate your body!"

The video even has an appearance from Matt McGorry, who plays John Bennet in Orange Is The New Black. McGorry has previously previously spoken out about women's rights, and even posted a #FreeTheNipple photo in support of the campaign.

Rose is expected to host a SlutWalk in Los Angeles on 3 October, in an effort to raise awareness of issues such as sexual assault, victim blaming, sexist labels and gender inequality.

A dad, named by the Internet as "umbrella dad", has become an internet sensation after being pictured drenched in the rain while holding an umbrella for his son.

The photo was initially uploaded to Reddit by Eumine Choi, who saw the pair in New York.

He added the caption: "What is love? Hope the son just grows up to realise how lucky he is... pay it forward."

The photo was then posted to Imgur, having now been viewed more than four million times.

View post on imgur.com

But now being more than just a photo, it seems to have sparked a global conversation about fatherhood.

One user wrote on the photo on Imgur: "The dad is doing more than keeping him dry, he's teaching him how to put others before himself."

Another person wrote: "This is amazing. I miss my dad everyday. He would have done this too."

Choi, 25, has opened up about the photo he took since it's gone viral.

He told Yahoo Parenting: "I was about to cross the street and I just wanted to take a picture to show my friends later that night. I wanted them to see what I witnessed.

"The dad was carrying a leather briefcase and some food, and instead of worrying about himself, he gave the umbrella to his son.

"Actually, his son wasn’t even holding it; the dad was holding it for him, and only certain people would think to do that."

Choi said his friend told him to upload it to Reddit. Having never been on the site before, he created an account to share the photo, but never expected it to viral.

He added: "I think everyone can relate somewhat and can recognise how much of a selfless act this is. It struck a sweet spot.

"Dads, they don’t get as much credit as they deserve."

Jessica Biel Feared She Couldn't Conceive After Being On The Pill, Experts Reveal How It Affects Fertility

Jessica Biel has confessed she didn't know how easy it would be to conceive her first child, having been on the pill for so long.

The 33-year-old gave birth to Silas, her and Justin Timberlake's first child together in April 2015.

However, in an interview with The Mirror, the actress admitted she had no idea what was going on with her body before she got pregnant.

She recalls asking herself: "Now what happens? I've been on the pill for so long; how hard will it be to get pregnant?

"Suddenly I realised I really didn't know what's going on inside my own body. It was shocking."

jessica biel

Although some women are concerned about the effects the contraceptive pill will have on their fertility, Professor Adam Balen, chairman of the British Fertility Society said it's more about a person's age.

He told HuffPost UK Parents: "The contraceptive pill stops an egg being released once a month and provides the body with an artificial cycle. The contraceptive effect is lost as soon as you stop taking it.

"Interestingly women lose eggs from the ovaries the whole time, whether on the ‘pill’ or not, but being on the ‘pill’ doesn’t have any long term effect on fertility.

"Remember that fertility declines naturally with age due to the loss of eggs from the ovaries and the declining fertility of those eggs that remain, so a woman’s chance of getting pregnant depends upon her age and not how long she’s been on the pill."

Professor Geeta Nargund, medical director at Create Fertility also agrees age is the more important issue.

Speaking to HuffPost UK Parents, she said: "Taking the contraceptive pill alone does not affect your future fertility but age does.

"Your hormone for egg reserve Anti Mullarian H‎ormone can be temporarily affected if tested whilst on pill.

"You can check your fertility status before you go on pill if you are anxious or have any medical or genetic concerns."

Man Has Toes Transplanted Onto Hand After Losing Fingers In Work Accident

When Frank Barreda lost the fingers on his right hand after a work-based accident, he feared he'd never be able to do manual labour again.

But doctors presented the tradesman with an unusual solution.

Medics have now replaced Barreda's missing thumb with his big toe in an impressive transplant procedure.

In a seven-hour operation, doctors removed the 47-year-old's toe from his foot and transferred all the small bones, nerves and blood vessels to his hand, creating a new finger.

toe hand

The operation took Barreda two weeks to recover from, but his transplant transformation is far from over.

"His thumb’s working well at the moment," Dr Sean Nicklin, a hand surgeon at Sydney Hospital told 7 News Sydney.

"But he’s got nowhere to go, nothing to pinch against - so we want to create some fingers," he added.

hand with toe

Barreda will undergo at least one other operation, where doctors will remove toes from his other foot in order to give him more fingers.

Medical staff are hopeful this further procedure will enable Barreda to return to manual work.

So, what does Barreda make of his new hand?

"I wouldn’t say I recommend it," he laughed. "But if you need to have it done, then yeah, I would."

toe hand thumbs up

Barreda's situation isn't as unusual as you may think. Sydney Hospital treat around one patient per year that requires their toes to be transplanted in place of fingers, according to 7 News Sydney.

In 2013, a British man underwent the procedure after losing his fingers in a motorbike accident.

Women Reveal What's Really Important When It Comes To Sex

There are plenty of misconceptions surrounding women when it comes to sex.

Some believe we have a lower libido, while others think we just don't orgasm as much as our male counterparts. It's pretty frustrating - namely because much of the time it's not true.

Now, one survey is hoping to set the record straight once and for all.

Women were asked to comment on their sexual experiences in terms of how often they orgasm, whether they have enough sex, and what is most important to them when it comes to love-making.

Interestingly, the study of 500 people found that - contrary to popular belief - most women orgasm, sometimes more than once, during each sexual encounter.

It also found that stress plays a huge role in dampening the mood.

woman in bed

The survey by fertility app Kindara found that more than half of women would like to have more sex.

Of those surveyed, 53.2% said they don't have sex as often as they would like to. Meanwhile nearly three quarters would like to engage in sexual activity more than three times per week.

It also discovered that plenty of women cherish emotional connection when it comes to sexy time, even above foreplay.

When women were asked to highlight the factors that deterred them from having sex, they revealed that stress was the biggest issue with 40% of women saying it put them off.

This was followed by feeling "out of sync" with their partner, not being in the mood and struggling with self image.

On a positive note, nearly 20% said there were no factors impacting their sex life.

MP Calls For Thin Models To Be Banned From Catwalk Ahead Of London Fashion Week

As the industry gears up for this year's London Fashion Week, the size zero debate has once again been brought to the forefront - and one British MP is calling for a ban on very thin models.

Caroline Noakes MP, who heads the All Parliamentary Group on Body Image, is campaigning for a law banning models with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of under 18 from the catwalk.

Noakes hopes Britain will follow in the lead of France, which is the latest country to vote to criminalise the use of models who are dangerously thin.

Victoria Beckham was recently criticised by for using 'skinny models' in her latest show at New York Fashion Week.

And earlier this year a YSL advert was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority, who deemed it to be 'irresponsible' for featuring an "unhealthily underweight" model.

However not everyone agrees that a focus on BMI would promote health.

The British Fashion Council currently does not enforce BMI, as they believe it is an inaccurate measure for young women.

Instead, the organisation say they have "a focus on looking after models [and] encourage health and wellbeing with healthy food and drink provided backstage at shows."

Alice Dogruyol, founder of premium denim brand Beauty in Curves, told HuffPost UK Style "To criminalise a BMI of less than 18 and threaten models with legal action is ludicrous - BMI is not an accurate measure of a person’s health and fitness.

"Fashion brands do need to take more responsibility and represent diverse body shapes and sizes on global catwalks.

"Surely the focus should be on health, not just body size. There are other things above and beyond size that require stronger legislation and matter more, such as the issues of smoking or binge drinking."

Many people have also spoken out about how a ban on certain body types would not be a positive step for women's body image in general.

Rivkie Baum, editor of plus-size magazine SLiNK told HuffPost UK Lifestyle: "The way to greater diversity and representation in fashion and the media is not to pit one type of body against another.

"Piers [Morgan] is right that the use of just very slim models both on the catwalk and within mainstream media gives many young girls unrealistic body ideals, but it is not about banishing very slim models altogether."

The Huffington Post has recently launched our #NYFW4All and #LFW4All campaign to highlight moments in Fashion Week that include people of all skin tones, genders, sizes, shapes and personalities - and we'll be shining a spotlight on shows that include models with a more diverse range of body types at this September's London Fashion Week.

A mum has shared an emotional post on Facebook after her son was inspired to go without his prosthetic eye thanks to his favourite rapper Fetty Wap.

Brenda Vaden's son Jayden was diagnosed with retinoblastoma - a rare type of eye cancer that affects children - when aged just one-year-old.

He had his right eye removed and has worn a prosthetic eye since.

However, influenced by Fetty Wap who also lost his eye at a young age, Jayden decided to take out his prosthetic.

Vaden wrote: "Today I am forever thankful to a young man named Willie Maxwell a.k.a Fetty Wap. I'm not necessarily his fan, but today I'm his biggest fan."

(Warning: long sentimental post ahead) Today I am forever thankful to a young man named Willie Maxwell aka Fetty Wap....

Posted by Brenda Vaden on Thursday, 10 September 2015

Fetty Wap was born with glaucoma - an eye disorder which results in damage to the optic nerve.

He lost his eye at six months old but decided not to wear his prothesis, telling Music Times he "didn’t want to look like everybody else".

Vaden continued on her post: "[Jayden] has always been terrified of taking his eye out and would not be caught without it and then comes along Fetty Wap.

"Similar to Jayden he lost an eye at a young age and along the way decided he didn't want to wear his prosthetic eye anymore, so he stopped.

"Jayden is a Fetty Wap fan, a real fan, not like me. Today, after weeks of asking, Jayden is venturing the world without his prosthetic.

"Of course am a wreck because this world can be cruel, but so proud."

Vaden added: "This young rapper unknowingly gave Jayden something we weren't able to give him - the confidence to be different- and I am grateful to him.

"Thanks to Fetty Wap for saying 'F the world this is me' and for helping make our baby boy just a little more remarkable than he already is.

"And we'll be purchasing his album, a small thank you to him for changing Jayden's life forever."

Since her post has attracted attention online, Vaden told BuzzFeed News her son is "so excited this milestone in his life is being shared".

She added: "This experience has been very humbling for our family and we are happy to see his uniqueness being celebrated."

Models carrying handbags "dripping with blood" took to the streets of central London today to protest the use of exotic animal skins on the catwalk.

A day before London Fashion Week kicks off five models - Jenny Miller, Dani Thompson, Olga Vilchinskaya, Anna Buraya and Daryna Milgevska - paraded the handbags on Bond Street in what PETA calls "a plea for fashion to be beautiful, not bloody".

"Animals are not fabric – they're living beings, who, just like us, feel pain, fear and love and want to live", Milgevska told HuffPost UK Style.

"There's nothing glamorous about wearing the skin of tortured animals – vegan fashion is the future."

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is an organisation that aims to protect the rights of animals.

Speaking about the Bond Street protest PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi said:

"Fashion should be beautiful, not bloody.

"PETA is calling on kind people everywhere to skip the deadly snakeskin stilettos, crocodile handbags and calfskin shoes in favour of modern cruelty-free vegan fashion."

According to PETA tens of thousands of crocodiles, alligators, snakes, eels, kangaroos and other animals are killed for their skins every year.

Keith Duffy Praises Daughter With Autism's 'Unbelievable' Grades: 'I Never Thought She'd Sit State Exams'

Keith Duffy is over the moon with his daughter with autism's "unbelievable" exam results.

Duffy's daughter Mia, 15, who was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old, recently sat her Junior Certificate - a qualification in Ireland held for students aged 13-15.

Sharing his excitement, the former Boyzone singer said on RTÉ Radio 1’s The Ray D’Arcy Show: "I never thought she’d be in mainstream school, I never thought she’d sit state exams, I never thought any of this would happen for her.

"We had no idea what to expect when the results came out. She could have come out with five or six Es and I would have been just as proud of her to be honest. But the fact that she did as well as she did was just unbelievable."

He tweeted the results, sharing that she received "eight honours" - honours refer to the higher-level exams.

Duffy's wife Lisa also tweeted her joy at her daughter's results.

Duffy, who also has a son Jay, 18, went on to say his daughter was "severely autistic" as a toddler and it was a "mini-miracle" that she has progressed so incredibly.

He said up until she was seven Mia didn't have much eye contact with other people and wasn't interested in socialising.

The former Boyzone singer added: "She spent a lot of time in her bedroom under her bed with a blanket over her head. We were quite a young family, it was so scary - we didn't know what to do."

Since Mia was diagnosed, Duffy and his wife have actively fundraised for autism awareness charities.

In October 2014, he received an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) for his charitable work.

Duffy is also a patron of Irish Autism Action (IAA), having raised more than four million euros for the charity.

If you could flit back in time to any era, which would you choose?

For us, it'd undoubtedly be the 1960s, the age of Peter Pan collars, mini skirts and the birth of the IT-girl.

Even now, Sixties influences fashion are present on the catwalk - just look at Jeremy Scott's quirky Spring/Summer 2016 collection from New York Fashion Week if you need proof.

jeremy scott fashion week

While this summer was a salute to the Seventies, autumn/winter is very much nodding towards the 1960s.

Thanks to icons such as Jean Shrimpton, Edie Sedgwick and Twiggy; winged eyeliner, big lashes and voluminous hair (helloooo beehives) are still very much en vogue. For those who want to channel this wonderful era, stock up on mini skirts, coloured tights, turtle necks, pinafore dresses and anything covered in geometric prints.

Towards the end of the Sixties, Twiggy paved the way for a more androgynous look with her boyish crop of hair. Meanwhile Audrey Hepburn took to wearing straight leg capri pants with ballet pumps and a chic ponytail for a paired-back, boyish look.

While we're (sadly) not going to be transported back to the Swinging Sixties anytime soon, we can still ogle these stunning photographs and take inspiration for the season ahead.
